Witness Audits

In a witness audit, an independent observer attends an audit, test, inspection or acceptance activity and reports on how it was carried out. The purpose is assurance that the activity followed the agreed method, not to repeat it.

When It Is Used

  • A customer wants independent confirmation that factory acceptance tests were carried out as specified
  • A group wants to confirm that internal or supplier audits follow its methodology
  • A contract requires an independent witness for testing or commissioning

What We Report

  • The activity witnessed, date, location and participants
  • The method or procedure that was required
  • Whether the activity followed it, with any deviations observed
  • Records and results seen, and any limitations of the observation

How It Differs From an Audit

A witness observes and reports on how an activity was performed. Conclusions about the product or system are drawn by whoever carried out the activity, unless a separate audit is agreed.
