Surveillance audits keep your certificate valid during its three-year cycle. They confirm that your management system continues to meet the standard and to deliver results.
When They Happen
At least once a year. The first surveillance audit is due within 12 months of the initial certification decision. Some organizations choose two shorter visits a year to spread the effort.
What Auditors Check Every Time
- Internal audits and management review since the last audit
- Action taken on previous nonconformities
- Complaints received and how they were handled
- Changes to the organization, processes, sites or scope
- Progress against objectives
- Correct use of the certificate and certification marks
- A sample of operational processes, chosen so that the whole scope is covered over the cycle
If a Surveillance Audit Is Missed
If surveillance cannot take place within the required period, certification may be suspended, and the public verification system shows “Suspended” until the audit is completed and any issues are resolved. Talk to us early if you face scheduling difficulties.
Making Surveillance Useful
Treat surveillance as an independent check on how your system is working. Share changes and challenges openly with the auditor. Findings are most useful when they reflect how the organization really operates.
Adding Standards or Sites
Scope extensions and additional standards can often be audited at a surveillance visit. Tell us in advance so audit time can be adjusted.
